Nearly every complaint about shopping agents comes down to the same thing: somebody budgeted for the item and met the rest of the bill afterwards. Nothing here is hidden — all of it is itemised in your cart before you confirm — but it arrives in two separate payments weeks apart, and that is enough to catch people out.
| Charge | When | What it is | Avoidable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| The seller's price | When you order the item | What the item costs on Taobao, Weidian or 1688. This is the number on every card in the list, and it is the one people quote to each other. It is rarely the biggest line on the final bill. | No |
| Domestic shipping inside China | When you order the item | The seller posting the item to Kakobuy's warehouse. Small, and often free above a certain order value with the same seller — which is why buying three things from one seller is cheaper than one thing from three. | Partly — consolidate sellers |
| The agent's service fee | When you order the item | Kakobuy's own cut for doing the buying. Agents compete loudly on this number, and it is usually the smallest difference between them — the shipping quote matters far more. | No |
| Storage, eventually | While it sits in the warehouse | Items are stored free for a period and then begin accruing a daily fee. It is designed to stop the warehouse becoming a wardrobe, not to make money, and you will not meet it on a normal haul. | Yes — ship within the free window |
| Optional services | Before you ship | Extra QC photos, removing a shoebox, repacking to save volume, adding bubble wrap. Each is small and each is a choice. Removing boxes is the one that routinely pays for itself in freight. | Yes — all of them |
| International freight | When you ship | The big one. Priced by weight — with a volumetric rule that can make a light bulky parcel cost like a heavy one — and it varies enormously by line and by destination country. | No, but choosable |
| Customs duty and VAT | After it lands | Charged by your country, not by the agent, and collected by the courier before delivery. Whether you are charged at all depends on your country's threshold and on the declared value. | No |
The three things that actually make it cheaper
Buy several things before you ship
This is worth more than every other optimisation combined. Freight is priced with a floor, so a parcel with one t-shirt in it costs nearly what a parcel with four costs. The warehouse exists precisely so you can accumulate.
Let them remove the boxes
Shoeboxes are air, and air is charged for under the volumetric rule explained in the shipping guide. Removing them is one of the optional services and on a multi-pair order it routinely saves more than it costs.
Buy from one seller where you can
Domestic shipping to the warehouse is per seller, and many sellers waive it above a threshold. Two items from one seller often cost less to get into the warehouse than one item from two.
A sane way to budget
Before you commit to anything, put a realistic haul in the cart, submit it as a parcel and read the shipping quotes — you are not obliged to pay one. That quote is the only honest answer to “what will this cost me”, and it takes five minutes. Then decide.
Questions
Why does this page not list the actual fee percentages?
Because they change, and a guide that quotes a stale number is worse than one that quotes none. Every charge is shown to you inside your Kakobuy cart before you confirm anything — that figure is live and this page would not be. What we can give you that the cart cannot is the order the charges arrive in and which ones you can avoid.
Which line surprises people most?
International freight, every time. People budget for the item and treat shipping as a rounding error, and on a light haul it can exceed the value of what is in the box. Get a quote on a realistic parcel before you decide an item is cheap.
Is it cheaper to ship several items at once?
Almost always, yes. Freight has a floor and then scales sub-linearly, so the second and third item in a parcel cost far less to ship than the first did. This is the single biggest saving available to you and it costs nothing but patience.
Does the coupon reduce the fees?
Agent coupons are typically credit against shipping rather than a discount on the item or the service fee. That makes them worth more on a heavy haul than on a single light item. See the coupon page for what is running now.
Who decides the customs charge?
Your own country's customs authority, on the declared value of the parcel. It is not set by Kakobuy and it is not something we or they can quote you. Look up your country's de minimis threshold before you order anything expensive.
